Default How Do I Keep a Box of Cubans Fresh Without a Humidor?

    Hi there.

I live in Toronto and I have a few boxes of Cuban cigars coming in soon.

The problem is, I don't have a humidor.

How do I keep them fresh for a long period of time?

And if I put them in a frezzer, how long can they sit in there for?

    Thanks.

    -Mark

I wouldn't dare put them in the freezer,I would think it would dry them(freeze dry) and when they thaw say hi to soggy sticks.

I would use a tupaware air tight seal with maybe ziplock bag of the cubans inside it.Maybe throw a small piece of sponge wet from distilled water and a small dry piece too.

    Just a thought

    The cheapest way to go...

Purchase a plastic cooler 20 or so gallon cooler - get a tupperware container - put a piece of floral foam in the Tupperware container. Soak the floral foam with distilled water - pour out any excess water. Place the floral foam/tupperware container in the cooler along with the boxes of cigars. Close the lid. The humidity will remain right around 70%...

Total cost - somewhere around $40-50 (at the outside)...

A little cheaper way is to got to your local B&M and buy a bag humidor. Usually around $7.00 and you are all set. If you dont have a local B&M a big ziplock bag and a small piece of florist foam will work fine.

    Cost = $2.00

Bag Humdor's the size of a few boxes of cigars??? I haven't seen those...

And the little humidor bags that hold 3-4 cigars are around MSRP $8.00 - the "large" Fuente bag MSRP is $20.00, which is said to hold 50 cigars...

    Go with the Coolidor...

Most tobacconists I've been into usually have some good humidors for sale for around $25-$40.
    End of line.

You can actually put your cigars in the freezer. That is how you get rid of Beetles. Whe you do freeze them though, you have to bring them back very slowly in the fridge for a few weeks.

And no your cigars will not be soggy when you defrost them. There is not enough moisture in them to make them soggy.

Yes,I knew about the freezer to kill beetles but he doesn't have beetles.

Another cheap method I used is to purchase a humi stick.$7-14 and will keep things between 65 and 70% and can use tap water and not need more water for about 6months.Simple buy, drop in water for two seconds a third of the way up the stick, drop in humi, done. Its the size of a corona.

I know that he doesn't have beetles. I was just saying that you can freeze cigars without ruining them.

Depends on your definition of ruined. I personally dont like smoking flavorless dried out sticks.

Get a few 2 gallon ziplock bags and throw a couple of 65% Boveda paks into each. No fuss, no muss.

Realy ! That sounds like a great cheap idea.

Whatever you do, don't freeze the cigars if they don't have beetles. The suggestion of getting large plastic bags and getting the humi paks is the best suggestion I have seen other than getting yourself a cheap cooler and using florist foam.

Make sure you use FREEZER bags. The other ones are too thin.

Alternatively, you could find a friend with a humidor and store them there. That is what my buddy did when he got back from Cuba... mind you he did give me a few of them in return ;).

Also, if you need any places in Downtown Toronto to purchase stuff, I know a few good stores. You could probably even pick up a not too expensive Humidor somewhere.

The best one I knew of was two doors down of my buddy's place on Queen East in the beaches called "Havana on the Beach" That place just closed. So now I go to these corner stores that have large humidors. I know, it's lame but I got to go somewhere.
