Project Humidor Re-Stock

Rate this Entry
This is just a blog where I can record the journey I am now on to re-build the contents of my once fairly healthy footlocker humidor. At the top of my cigar smoking life, I had three humidors and I had about 400 cigars. Yeah, I know this isn't very many compared to a lot of people that post here, but it's a good amount to me.

This journey is NOT about people sending me cigars. I don't want any of that sort of thing to happen. I may request someone to buy some cigars that are expensive here in D.C. on my behalf as I've done in the past, but that is the limit of the assistance I will accept. In fact, I was hesitant to even start this blog because I feared someone might think I was "fishing" for gifts or some such B.S. Of course, I don't think those that knew me in the past would question my integrity or pure intentions in any way.

I am a bit of a planner. I like to plan what I want to do and then accomplish it. So, this little project won't be any different. I was thinking about what I wanted in my humidor, if I could have it stocked any way I wanted. The thought occurred to me that it is completely possible to put exactly what I want in my humidor. While money is one of the major obstacles, it isn't over the course of time. In fact, I think it will take about a year and a half to get things the way I want them. I will post an entry later that will be my planned humidor stock list. A few things are sure; I know what I like to smoke; and I know there are cigars that I haven't smoked that I will also like. With that in mind, if you see me post a cigar I like and you know a cigar that is similar that I didn't post, please let me know so I can try it.

Here is my finalized initial list of cigars I want in my humidor:

5-Vegas Limitada 2013 - Belicoso (6.2 x 52)
Ashton VSG - Sorcerer (7 x 49)/Illusion (6.5 x 44)/Robusto (5.5 x 50)/ANY

Just fill your humi with Padron and be done.
  2. badwhale's Avatar
I'm semi just kidding about the Padron option. Any updates?

Listen, if I (or any other member), can obtain your address.....you'll just have to accept whatever lands in your mailbox. No crying.

    Welcome back!

badwhale, I semi-agree with you. the 3000 has NEVER let me down and, in fact, it is a good summary of about the strength and taste I like in cigars.

ashauler, thanks for the welcome back. One thing is for sure, this board has some of the most generous and true BOTL's there are. If I were keeping score, in the total short time I've been on this board past and present, I would be too far behind in the gift-giving department to even think about giving out my address for the acceptance of even more of everyone's kind generosity. I hope to build my humidor back up and then through the exchange of cigars, box splits and some games, I hope to give back to this community gradually. During those exchanges, if someone wants to send me a kindness, I must not cry and I will not!
  6. ashauler's Avatar
Yep, I completely agree with your sentiments regarding the board.

Famous has the Padilla 8 / 11, but I kinda doubt it's the original blend anymore:

    Maybe they are?

Also, whenever you need box quantity Padron, let me know. While there was a recent price increase, my shop still beats the online prices.

Thanks for the note and I WILL take you up on that next year, as Maryland has a huge tax on everything.

Our Class 6 store at Ft. Meade put in a new humidor room that is surprisingly VERY nice. They actually carry some pretty good sticks in there, but there selection is still limited. However, no tax, which makes the price right! (For Maryland, at least.) I still bet your prices beat the Class 6's.

The other thing that worries me is that I don't know what happened to their cigars BEFORE they put them in the display room; I don't think the military is all that good at some things and those boxes might be sitting on the docks for a month, for all I know.

I appreciate your offer. However, I've been away from this board for many years, and I just don't feel right about taking gifts from people just yet. I haven't been a good brother to this board. Let me prove myself again. At that time, you'll get my address when I bomb you!

I would very seriously doubt that these are the original Pepin blended/rolled sticks.
The lanceros from back then were fuckin stellar.

I was remembering wrong. I wanted to try the Padilla Miami, but I was actually thinking about the Padilla Series 68, which, sadly, I think is gone now. I bought a box (how I remembered was actually by looking at the empty box), and they were ridiculously good for the pittance I paid for them! If I would have done some research, I would have been on top of the situation and "done the right thing".

Well, despite my best efforts, someone managed to bomb me. No, I am not going to whine; I'm taking it like a man!

George, you really blew me away! That was the most excellent gift and I can't thank you enough for your generosity! Have a very Merry Christmas!

In my mind - that is the best part of board membership - the feeling you made someone's day with some rolled up dead leaves! Glad to hear it hit the spot! Merry Christmas to you and yours - and a prosperous new year.

Yes indeed! For some reason a certain BTO ditty is playing in my mind at the moment. Ba-Ba-ba-bayyyybe......

So, how's the restock project going? What have you added that's completely "new" to you? Any hidden gems you've found? Enquiring minds want to know.
  19. badwhale's Avatar
I agree. Starting a blog here shall not be taken lightly, and will require hours of diligent updates.

I'm glad you asked. So, I sent an e-mail to the folks at Olivia telling them how much I loved their, now expired, Olivia O Bold. I asked them if they could recommend something. Here is what he said to me:
    Hi Ray,

Thanks for your enthusiastic support of our product. Unfortunately, we no longer make the O Bold. However, I have a couple recommendations that is comparable. First is the Cain Daytona 646 and second is the Serie O corona (6x46). Both have similar wrappers and blends and are the same size as the O Bold Omni. Hopefully this helps. Thanks again for your support.

    Sincerely,

    Cory Bappert

So, that got me to thinking. First, while the Series O is "similar" to the O Bold, they did not taste nearly the same. The O Bold was stronger. Here is the story:

    http://halfwheel.com/oliva-serie-o-classic-ovation/

While he recommended the Cain Daytona, it is only a medium. The Cain Habano, however, to me looks MUCH more like what the bold might be. So, pending my tasting, I may add the Cain Habano to my list.

Please remember that I am not necessarily about adding new cigars to my list. I am trying to get the stock of things I like up high. To that end, I've added a lot of the following:

    La Aurora 1495
5 Vegas Limitada 2013 (This cigar is really good this year...I know I've said that, but I am really enjoying them.)
Joya de Nicaragua Antaņo Dark Corojo (Never tried before, but it's now IN my humidor.)

I'm probably going to want to add the My Father's and the Undercrown's as well. They both came out while on my little cigar down time. I have samples of both, but I am waiting to try them under good conditions. Sitting out the freezing cold on my porch is NOT a good time to try a new cigar.
